Ziggy's progress

Well the Zig-man has come a long long way over the last 7 months. Over the last month or two he was released from the vets for the stall only restrictions. Which was good because he was driving us crazy!!!!!! So he has been with the other babies and is totally back to his normal self.

The boys were also gelded a few weeks ago as well. They both did amazingly well. Ziggy was just a snip but she had to dig for one of Bolt's because only one had dropped. They hardly had any swelling. The vet was worried about the grow spurt the gelding might have on Ziggy but so far so good.

The babies are hating this hot weather. We have 5 water buckets out there at a time and we fill them up 3-4 times a day! They like staying inside though with the fan on them.

Today Doug our ferrier came for a visit and he took off Ziggy's shoe. He really needed it done because his toe was really growing out. It was making him rock back on his heel again. Well, after he trimmed him up he was looking fantastic and this is the first time in 7 months that Ziggy has been a "real" horse and just has the hooves on his feet and no hardware!!!! YAY for Ziggy!!!!

The finished product

Ziggy is grumpy we took him away from his hay!

A side shot.. See how big he is getting?

Happy Belated Birthday Babies!

It is so nice that the weather has started to change to spring! With the nice weather, we have been spending way more time outside!! I hope that the weather where you are is just as nice as the weather we have been having. Ziggy has been doing pretty good. The poor thing is getting so restless though since he has been in a stall since Christmas! He is starting to get bad because he wants to play so bad that had been nipping at us like he would do with the other babies. He is finding some amusement though in the jolly ball that we put in his stall..so hopefully that will help keep him busy.

About a month ago was the babies first birthday!! We assume they were born on March 8th. To celebrate, we expanded the baby pen (finally since we have been wanting to this all winter!) Our neighbor Mim (their godmother) brought up a happy birthday sign and some horse treats and some saw dust! By the time I got my camera though, bolt had already eaten half of the birthday sign, so I didn't get a picture! Sorry Mim!! :) The babies love their new pen though, and really burn off a lot of energy out there. They were becoming a handful to walk them out front before, but now that they can run around.. they aren't as high strung and ready to go when we take them up! It's the best thing we've done!! (and that's saying something! haha)

Two weeks ago when Doug was here, he put a shoe on Ziggy's other foot (his right one) because he thought that it looked like it was starting to pull under a little bit. It straightened his foot right out. Unfortunately, it came off a few days ago, so we are just waiting until Doug can come back again so we can put it on. His other shoe is still on and is working really good. His foot is really supported and its not drooping anymore! Hopefully his leg is healing and he will be able to come out of his stall soon. With the help of Doug (the best farrier in the valley!!!) hopefully he will be up and going by this summer!! Thanks for all your hard work Doug!

Here are some pictures of the babies new pen. They are enjoying one of the first days of sunshine. And then there are some of Ziggy. You can see how big he is getting! He is growing like a weed!

Enjoy and Happy Easter!

Update on Ziggy: part 3

The last few months have been a slow one for Ziggy. His exercise has increased to at least 15 minutes a day. Some days you can really tell when he is stir crazy because he can be a real butt when you are trying to walk him. He just wants to run!!! And dad has created a monster!!!!! I don't even want to know how many cookies he gets a day from dad during their walks! Good gravy!!

When he first had his surgery, he got it for a clubbed foot. Now however, the left foot..which was the worst.. kinda has the opposite problem! (the right foot is great and has really healed up nicely!!) His "ankle" joint or his fetlock has now become hyperextended when he walks. The vet said that he needed to increase his exercise time to try and strengthen the muscle. We tried this for a few weeks and even found a brace that was supposed to help support the suspensatory ligaments. It seemed to help a little bit, but some times when he was walking, it would make your stomach churn for how extended it was getting. Obviously this was a better problem to have than what he had before the surgery, but it still needed to be corrected.

The last time Doug was out, we called the vet who did his surgery to find out if there was anything else we could do or that she would recommend to help this. She said we needed to put on a shoe that has an extension on the back to make it so he can't flex as much. She also said that we needed to continue back with the wrapping of his leg with the cotton wrap and the vet wrap and that he needed to be back on stall rest with no more than 5 minutes a day of exercise so that the leg can now heal more and hopefully tighten up.

His new wrap.. don't you love the hot pink zebra?? :)

His new kicks

again

the best pic of it that we could get. you can see the shoe and then the added part that comes out the back. It was amazing to watch Doug make this and to actually put it on. I've never seen a horse get a shoe before!

Update on Ziggy: part 2

So about a week after his surgery, Doug the ferrier came out to take care of Ziggy's feet. He had to add a toe extension like I said in the last post. Ziggy was being bad, so we had to call our vet Holly to bring in reinforcements. She gave him some drugs and then he was a good boy for us.

I'm also added some pictures of the other babies so you can see how big everyone is getting. Bolt is turning into a big butthead, so we really need to get our round pen situated again so we can start teaching him some good manors.

Ziggy out for another walk

What his left incision looked like about 1 week post op... i forgot to take pics of the right foot incision...

The left foot again

Doug's first time working with him after surgery

Adding a toe extension

The tow extension was kinda like caulking stuff. it came out of a gun thing like that. He heated it up and then put plastic wrap around his foot after he molded it and it dried.

After that, he applied a really sticky tape to the bottom to keep it on..

that would have been a good shot, but his hand got in the way!

The final product. We also added duct tape to the bottom to keep it protected so it wouldn't fall off.
